A sublime example of the vintage Rolex Submariner Date reference 1680, the iconic “Red Sub.” Produced until 1975, this watch belongs to the highly sought-after MK4 “feet first” series, with serial number 265XXXX, immediately following the “meters first” production. Preserved in outstanding condition, the original MK4 dial displays a superb yellow-vanilla patina, with the red “Submariner” text remaining bold and visually prominent. The slightly lighter hands further enhance the vintage character of the watch. Exceptionally rare in such condition—particularly as most examples were heavily used for diving—this piece stands out as a true collector’s watch. Accompanied by an almost unheard-of full set of period accessories, it represents a museum-quality example and an essential cornerstone for any serious Rolex collection.
The stainless steel case remains impressively thick, with perfectly defined angles and clearly visible chamfers. The watch has been professionally polished, preserving the original geometry and proportions of the case, which now presents very close to its factory appearance. The bezel is in very good condition and fitted with its original MK3 insert, displaying a superb bluish fade with an attractive and even patina. No major impacts are visible, and the overall condition of the case is outstanding.
The watch is fitted with an original Submariner red MK4 dial, exhibiting a beautiful and homogeneous patina that has aged to a warm yellow-vanilla tone. The dial is in excellent condition, free from defects, and belongs to the MK4 “feet first” series, representing the first production of the Red Submariner with the depth rating printed in feet before meters. The tritium hands are original and unrestored, slightly lighter in color than the hour markers, yet fully consistent with the dial and confirming the authenticity of the set.
An extraordinarily complete set, including the original box and outer box, double punched guarantee papers with matching serial number and reference, Rolex service documentation from Australia in the name of the first owner, and the exceptionally rare original sales invoice bearing the same name. Such a complete ensemble is virtually impossible to find today.
An exceptional Rolex Submariner Date “Red Sub” ref. 1680 Mark IV, preserved in outstanding condition with a beautifully patinated original dial and bezel, and accompanied by an extraordinarily complete, museum-grade full set of period accessories.
